Welcome to the South Carolina Innocence Initiative!

This Initiative was founded in 2022 by Dr. Dawn McQuiston to address issues of innocence and wrongful conviction in South Carolina. Its mission centers on education, outreach, and advocacy, and currently operates through two main programs:

  • The Innocence Clinic Experience, led by Dr. McQuiston, gives students the opportunity to work with the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence and local attorneys to assist in reviewing innocence claims from South Carolina inmates. Through this program, students engage in an in-depth academic exploration of causes of wrongful convictions, then apply this knowledge through hands-on experience in screening and evaluating cases. This work is meaningful and high-impact in the pursuit of justice.
  • The Innocence & Justice Society is a student led campus organization that hosts events, discussions, and fundraisers at Wofford College to raise awareness about wrongful conviction and justice inequities within both the academic community and the broader public. Follow them at @ijswofford.

The Initiative is supported by an Advisory Council of legal, academic, and community leaders who provide guidance on programming and advocacy efforts. See below for Council names and affiliations.

Together, these programs foster understanding, inspire action, and promote justice across South Carolina and beyond.

2024 South Carolina Innocence & Justice Conference
May 3, 2024 | Wofford College Campus, Spartanburg, SC

The South Carolina Innocence Initiative held its inaugural Innocence & Justice Conference on May 3, 2024 on the Wofford College campus in Spartanburg, SC. This conference brought together leaders in the legal arena to examine the causes, challenges, and remedies associated with cases of innocence and wrongful conviction in South Carolina. It focused on client advocacy in preventing wrongful conviction, strategies to investigate cases post-conviction, and a path forward to reimagine innocence efforts in South Carolina. This year’s conference theme was Charting the Course.
